    Get Your Game On!

By Billy the Ant the 16 August 2010

In years gone by, video games had a target market of teenage boys, with messy rooms and bad attitudes. Luckily, video games have moved on a great deal in the last few years, not only with the graphics and technology used but also with the broad range of games on the market, guaranteeing there really is something for everyone.

For this week’s spotlight, I compiled the ultimate list of games on the market at the moment. I handpicked these games based on reviews, sales and most importantly what I thought of the game.

So today, I want to share with you my absolute favourite out of those that I found.

    Let me set the scene…

Alan Wake is a supernatural thriller novelist and has just finished an especially haunting novel. Him and his wife Alice, head away to a small town in Washington, Spring Falls, to relax and take a little holiday. When they arrive, there is an ominous feeling in the town. The small-town residents are charming but there is a feeling of unease that hangs in the air and many of the residents say, if you stay too long in Bright Falls it can start to play with your mind a little. With this sense of unease already beginning to set in on Alan, his wife Alice disappears. As he desperately searches for her, things start to deteriorate and the world of the supernatural that he created in his most recent novel starts to come to life immersing Alan in a world of evil which he may never be able to escape from.

    Gripping stuff eh!?

In this interactive game, your character is Alan Wake and you guide him through the small town of Spring Falls to look for his wife. Not only is the storyline gripping but the graphics are magnificent. Playing the game immerses you in the world and feels like you are right there due to the amazing 3D graphics and realistic soundtrack, with echo noises and running water sounds.

Overall, you can clearly see in this game, the attention to detail Microsoft has put into this game has really paid off and if you are to buy one game this year, make it Alan Wake!

The last few months have featured some great additions to the world of video games which got me thinking of a few video games and consoles to put on my Christmas list.

Some of the top items on my list (in no particular order) are:
    - Playstation 3 Slim
    - Nintendo Wii Black Console
    - PSP Go
    - Nintendo DSi
    - Wii Fit Plus
    - DJ Hero

Granted I don’t expect to receive all of these but I’d be happy with any one of them!

I’m really curious about DJ Hero. I am a huge fan of Guitar Hero so I’d imagine DJ Hero would be right up my alley. I’ve heard mixed reviews but I want to try it out before I judge it.

I don’t know about you but I think this year we’ve seen many great new video game and console releases! I hope next year we won’t be disappointed…maybe a new xbox model??? ;-)

    The Future of Video Gaming

It seems the next step in the evolution of video games and consoles is digital downloads.  Allow me to introduce you to Zeebo:

    Source: www.engadget.com

    Source: www.engadget.com

Zeebo offers free 3G connectivity over the ZeeboNet Wireless Network, which allows users to download games in minutes without leaving their home.  The console costs around $200 USD and games start at $10 USD.  The system uses only 1 watt of power and weights under 2 pounds.  Games have a screen resolution of 640 x 480.

The console launched in April in Brazil, and is set to continue to target middle classes in emerging markets such as India, Russia, and Eastern Europe.  Zeebo is calling this market the “next billion gamers.”  And even if the console won’t be for sale here in the UK anytime soon, let’s hope that its digital game distribution is soon adopted by the big boys like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.

Nintendo DSi – The 3rd Generation

By Billy the Ant the 26 March 2009

Nintendo’s handheld consoles have come a long way since the original Game Boy from 1989.  In 2004, the Japanese video game company added the Nintendo DS to their line, which was followed by the DS Lite shortly after and now the third generation, the Nintendo DSi is finally here…

The Nintendo DSi is 12% thinner than its predecessor, and also comes with a bigger and brighter 3.25″ screen. Users can now take pictures with the two 3.0 megapixel inwards and outwards facing cameras. The DSi also allows you to edit the pictures and save them in a photo album or onto a SD card for sharing with friends and family.

With the DSi Sound application you can even record, create and play with music. And the DSi’s improved connectivity allows you to download games and applications online, like a free internet browser or cartoon making programs.

Everyone, especially longtime fans of Nintendo’s portable consoles will find something to love about the newest member of the family! The Nintendo DSi will be available in the UK on April 3rd for  £150.
